Classless

island grillI’ll admit that I am a bit of a grill elitist. I have an out door kitchen set-up at my house, and I think that it is the best, but at the same time, I’m not going to go out there and flaunt it just to feel better about myself, which I find is a problem among people my age. They finally have money for these luxuries in life, and they are excited to get them, but instead of just enjoying them, they have to show them off and brag to feel like they are the best by virtue of their belongings. I find that it’s most prevalent among people who invest their luxury money in cars and home improvements.

Now, I kind of understand cars because clearly, a car is something that you take out in public and people are going to see. Home improvements, though, such as grills, landscaping and the like don’t fit the same mold. Sure, you might have people over sometimes, but a person’s home is generally for his or herself.

Anyway, this was all brought on by one of my least favorite co-workers. He actually did the car thing last year, and this year is the home thing. He heard that I had an outdoor kitchen with a built-in island grill and some nice accessories, so he felt the need to come and compare notes. And by compare notes, I mean brag about how much better his is because it has a gas grill instead of charcoal, marble counters instead of granite, and so on. He didn’t even invite me over to see his. That’s just rude.
